When is the best time to fill up in Australia?

If you have ever filled up on a Thursday and noticed the price was 20 cents higher than it was two days earlier, you are not imagining things. Australian fuel prices follow a predictable cycle, and understanding it can save you $300 to $500 per year.

How the fuel price cycle works

In most capital cities, petrol prices follow a repeating pattern. Prices drop to their lowest point early in the week, then climb sharply towards the end of the week before resetting. The cycle typically runs between 7 and 14 days in Sydney and Melbourne, and closer to 30 days in some regional areas.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has tracked this pattern for years. In Sydney and Melbourne, the cheapest day to fill up is usually Tuesday or Wednesday. By Thursday or Friday, prices can jump 15 to 40 cents per litre. On a 50-litre tank, that is $7.50 to $20 difference for exactly the same fuel.

State-by-state differences

Not every state follows the same rhythm. Brisbane and Adelaide have their own cycles, and Perth moved to a regulated weekly cycle in 2001 where prices reset every Tuesday. Regional towns often do not cycle at all — prices tend to stay higher and more stable.

In NSW, the cycle is most pronounced in Greater Sydney. In Victoria, Melbourne follows the pattern closely but regional centres like Geelong and Ballarat may lag by a day or two. Queensland cycles tend to be less predictable, which makes checking prices before you fill up even more important.

The real trick: check before you drive

Timing the cycle helps, but the bigger savings come from comparing stations near you. Prices can vary 30 cents per litre between two stations in the same suburb on the same day. That variance adds up to hundreds of dollars per year.

Helira tracks over 5,400 fuel stations across NSW, Victoria, Queensland, and Western Australia. The fuel finder shows you the cheapest petrol and diesel near your suburb, updated multiple times per day. No guessing, no driving around.

Quick rules for saving at the bowser

  • Fill up on Tuesday or Wednesday in Sydney and Melbourne.
  • In Perth, fill up on Tuesday before the weekly reset.
  • Check prices before you leave — a 2-minute check can save $10 per fill.
  • Avoid filling up on Thursday or Friday unless you have confirmed prices are still low.
  • Use the Helira fuel finder to compare prices in your area before every fill.

The fuel price cycle is not a secret — it is a well-documented pattern that most drivers simply do not take advantage of. A small shift in when you fill up, combined with checking which station is cheapest, puts real money back in your pocket every week.
